Every time I give assignments to our students on trading, there are 80 percent chances that they won’t do it. Now I know it’s not because they don’t respect their assignments or me, or they don’t want to learn about trading. And it’s not even because they forgot it. For most of the people including the new traders, there is one common reason to it. They didn’t find TIME!!
Isn’t not getting time, a convenient answer to all of them? Or did everyone take time for granted?
Now let me put you in a situation
Imagine you won a lottery and was given the opportunity to drive these cars: Mercedes, BWM, Jaguar, Lamborgini, Ferrari!
Sounds exciting, Right? Now here’s the kicker..
You just have 2 hours!!
What would you do? Would you make the most of it? Or just let it slip?
Will you give any ‘Did not find time’ excuses?
Or will you say, “nah I will sleep for an hour and take it out an hour later?”
Of course not.
You will probably make the most of those two hours you have to enjoy these beasts.
Now I have a question for you,
Are these cars more valuable than your life?
Of course not!
Then why wouldn’t you treat your life as important as these cars?
The one thing that is the most valuable aspect of your life is time. Time to love, time to live, time to do things which you are passionate about, time to read, learn etc. From the moment a human is born, it begins to die. It”s just a matter of time..
1440! Ring a bell?
That’s the number of minutes you have in a day!
And how many minutes do we waste every day? Doing things that are nowhere related to your goal or aspirations and passions..
Ever noticed a graveyard? When you’re born, that’s the date they put on the left side of the tombstone. And when you die, they put another date on the right side of the tombstone. But that dash in the middle, is the most important thing on that tombstone. That is the line that defines you. The timeframe you were able to impact and touch other’s lives. The time you were able to leave your mark on this earth. And maybe build a legacy that nobody could change.
Life is ultimately nothing but time, when you waste an hour of your time, you waste a certain percentage of your life.
How you spend an hour, determines how you spend a day. How you spend a day, determines how you spend a year. And how you spend a year, determines how you spend your life.
Let’s go back 5 years in the past. Imagine the amount of time you’ve wasted. What if you would have put it to a better use? Do you think your life would have been better if you would have utilized your time properly?
I always say to myself, wish I had known about trading sooner. But that’s in the past. A rebellious arrogant boy who didn’t give a damn about anyone or anything. Leave alone wasting time. I was the poster guy when it came to wasting time! (Except money. I loved making and saving money!!) Then my life changed for good. (That’s a long story, which I’m gonna save for another time )
Anyway, 5 years ahead in the future, what you do today will determine where you would be 5 years from now.
People who value time and spend it wisely have everything in life, success, money, happiness and satisfaction. If not everything, they have at least one of these. On the other hand the ones who waste time, they just spend their entire life wondering how life went by and they still haven’t achieved anything.
So stop procrastinating. If you know that something important needs to be done, then do it that very moment without giving it a second thought.
We all know that life is precious. However, we forget that time is life and wasting time means wasting life.
How to stop wasting Time?
Have a vision – Having a vision in your life or in business means you are having a clear sense of purpose. You need to know where exactly you need to reach say in 2, 3, or 5 years from now! Make a S.M.A.R.T objective. Meaning, it has to be SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC & TIMELY. Yes, that thing which everyone does in corporate! But guess what, it works!! In this way, you know you are going in the right direction.
Start making goals – Now goals does not mean in a year what you are going to achieve. There are 95% chance that you won’t be attaining your goal in that long time frame! Make small goals. For a day or for a week. Try and achieve that! Because if you can’t, there is no way your reaching anywhere near your vision. You will eventually just drift away!
Set your priorities straight – Set priorities for tasks you have for the day or the week. Fill in your board or calendars with tasks to complete. You should plan your activities according to the priorities you have. Top priority tasks should be done earlier in the day. I saw an interview of a US Navy Seal Admiral where he spoke about his first task. And that is “Make Your BED”. Because if you make your bed every morning, you have accomplished the first task of your day. (I started doing it myself!!).
Plan and commitment – When you know what needs to be done, plan your day accordingly and work towards it. Make a plan for every hour. Now if that means you need to have a chat with your friend or play video games, set a time for that. In this way you know exactly what you have to do in those particular hours! And make sure to stick to it. Commitment is something which you and only you can enforce upon yourself. There will be so many people in your life to ruin that plan. Control your environment. Say that you have greater things to do instead of wasting time on something which is not helping in achieveing your goals. And stop making plan B! I hate plan B. It’s like ‘If my plan doesn’t work, I have a fallback plan. I have a plan b.’ And that means you start thinking about plan b and every thought you put into plan B, you’re taking away that thought and energy from plan A. When you have a plan, it is very important to understand that we function better if there is no safety net because plan b becomes a safety net. Give your full commitment & be disciplined on working on that plan. Stop procrastinating. Procrastination is the thief of time!
Stop complaining – This, I think is the most important one. People start complaining about their work due to so many reasons. One of them is not having time. And some blaming your colleagues or your friends due to which you were not able to finish up your task. Again, whose fault is that? Own your responsibilities. Stop pointing fingers at others by holding them responsible for not being able to finish your work . Cowards do that. Not you. If you made a mistake, own it. You failed to accomplish your task, work around it and see how you can finish it! That’s how you can achieve your goal!
And when you achieve the goal trust me that’s the day you will definitely feel you have done something for yourself!
Do you still say you don’t have time? Let’s do the math
You have 24hrs in a day. Let’s say you sleep 8 hrs. I know most of you don’t even sleep that much but let’s take that into consideration. Now, you are left with 16hrs. An average person work for 8hrs, you’re left with 8hrs. Let’s say you spend 2hrs on your transport . Being in a city like Bangalore might take you up to 3hrs if you live far away from your workplace. And some reach home within minutes. Now you’re left with 7, 6 or 5 hrs. What are you going to do with this time ? Chit chat with friends? Watch a movie? Go out for a drink ? Play games? Now these 7, 6 or 5hrs is going to define what you want out of your life. Again, would you like to let it slip? Or make progress towards your goals? Choice is yours!!
I know this calculation of 24 hours is amazing and challenging to do to reach your vision. That too, with consistency. Again, who said it is going to be easy?
Dreaming is free. In fact, I would say you should dream about reaching somewhere in life. That’s how you will have a vision and a goal. And do work on attaining those goals. But dreams, without any goal – they are just dreams.
If you want something you never had, then you need to do something which you never did!
